The Healthworks Foundation Fitness Center’s Young Women on The Move (YWOM)
Program provides at-risk girls, ages 12-16, with fitness and health and
wellness education. This 8-week program (4 weeks in the summer
and 4 weeks
during school vacations) primarily targets girls who do not have access
to physical fitness opportunities and are at risk for to developing
diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle. The overarching goal is to
enhance participants’ quality of life and give them tools to deal with
life challenges.
Thank you
to The Deutsche Bank Foundation and the Tigers Woods Foundation for
donating $17,500 to the Young Women on the Move program, making it
possible for Healthworks Foundation to offer this valuable experience.
General Programming
The Healthworks Foundation understands that gaining access to fitness is
the first step for many women toward empowerment. Since this is often a
difficult step, it is crucial for women to obtain support. The
Healthworks Foundation Fitness Center (HWFFC) provides a fun, safe, and
supportive environment in which women can become empowered to take
control of their physical and emotional wellbeing. The
member/scholarship program gives women free access to the environment
needed to develop the whole woman- mind, body, and spirit.
Scholarship recipients have access to our wide range of group exercise
classes, taught by certified experienced group exercise instructors,
while increasing their self-awareness and positive social connections.
Each recipient also receives a fitness assessment and an exercise and
stretching safety orientation, as well as a complete and comprehensive
orientation on all of the exercise equipment. Pre and post natal women
are encouraged to apply, as we offer pre and postnatal fitness trainers
and group exercise classes. Immediately following the preliminary
orientations, HWFFC members meet with a wellness coach. Six weeks after
consecutive use of the fitness center HWFFC members receive a personal
trainer.
When we collaborate with like minded community agencies we offer a
flexible range of programming from weekly on-site instruction to
in-house group orientations and/or classes. Below is a brief description
of our in-house programming.

grow and explore their social, physical and mental well-being throught
the discipline of physical activity in a safe, supportive and fun

developing diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle. The overarching

Women @ Healthworks Health & Wellness Series
Women @ Healthworks is a twenty-week program at the Foundation Fitness
Center that teaches, supports, and motivates women to make healthy
changes around exercise, nutrition and stress management that will
positively impact their health and career opportunities. Women @
Healthworks’ participants are students at the Women @ Work program at
St. Mary’s Women and Children’s Center. Women @ Work is a welfare reform
employment readiness-training program that addresses the vocational
needs of women who face multiple barriers to employment including
homelessness, lack of GED or high school diploma, history of substance
abuse or domestic violence, and difficulty obtaining or sustaining
employment.
Complementing job-readiness training, Women @ Healthworks offers women
additional tools to improve their quality of life and, in turn, improve
their chances of maintaining stable employment. Over the course of
twenty weeks, participants attend weekly, two-hour workshops, which
center on nutrition, mind and body, exercise and wellness issues and two
weekly individual or group cardiovascular and strength-training
workouts. In addition, participants receive pre and post health
screenings and fitness assessments.
Pre- and Post-Natal Fitness Program
The goals of this program are 1) to impart health education to pregnant
teens, 2) to help prevent infant mortality in African American and
Latina women and 3) to insure the pregnant and postnatal members receive
the most appropriate and helpful services and education. Pregnant or
parenting members of the Foundation Fitness Center are offered special
group exercise classes focusing on strength training, yoga and
meditation; personal training focusing on pre- and post-natal health
concerns, and educational workshops.
Foundation Training
Being in such a nurturing environment, it wasn't long until some
members, deeply transformed by their fitness experience, began volunteer
training for working within the fitness industry. Our Foundation
Training program was birthed from a need for consistent group exercise
and personal trainer volunteers and our members wanting to give the
gifts that had been stirred up in them back to our community. Foundation
Instructor Training (augFIT) is a 10 week training program happening
annually right here at HWFFC! Headed by master group exercise instructor
Tavia Patusky the program offers a structured study regimen, group
exercise instructor etiquette, group exercise mentorship, AFAA
certification test prep and payment for testing and testing materials in
exchange for teaching classes at the Foundation Fitness Center for 6
months. April Personal Training Training (APTTitude) is a 6 month
training program, headed by master personal trainer Pam Jones. This
program, similar to augFIT offers a structured study regimen, personal
instructor etiquette, personal training experience and mentorship, ACE
certification test prep and payment for testing and testing materials in
exchange for a weekly 4 hour commitment of personal training at the
Foundation Fitness Center for an additional 6 months.
Group Exercise
Based on the quality of classes offered at Healthworks Fitness Centers
for Women, the Healthworks Foundation Fitness Center offers group
exercise classes including hip hop, self defense, Pilates, yoga, boxing,
and step aerobics. The goal of our group exercise classes is to increase
fitness levels, body awareness, and enhance each member’s ability to
autonomously engage in a safe and effective workout. Presently classes
are designed for our beginner to intermediate members.
