Healthworks Fitness Centers and The Healthworks Foundation at both St.
Mary's and Codman are excited to be a part of the second,
non-profit fitness center in Codman Square, Dorchester, MA. This
location specifically targets the fitness needs of children while
continuing to meet the needs of women in the community. Come in, and
you will immediately see that Healthworks at Codman rivals any upscale
fitness facility.
OUR HISTORY:
BUILDING A CENTER FOR
HOPE AND EMPOWERMENT
Recognizing that addressing some Dorchester residents' tendency to
lead unhealthy lifestyles would require a partnership with an
organization that was experienced in the provision of fitness
services,
DotWell approached The Healthworks
Foundation. Together, the two organizations developed a plan to build
a 9,000 square foot facility that would offer fitness programs to
Dorchester residents. The cost of the project’s construction was
estimated at $575,000. The facility was built at 450 Washington Street
(formerly a courthouse), on the corner of two major Dorchester roads -
Washington Street and Park Street, with a large parking lot situated
directly across the street.
Operated by The Healthworks Foundation, in close partnership with the
Codman Square Health Center (which owns the building) and Healthworks
Fitness Centers, the facility has now been running successfully for
over five years. It continues to prosper thanks to generous
contributions and gifts from Healthworks employees and volunteers.
Healthworks is committed to funding the club's day-to-day operations
with the donation of 1.25% of its membership dues.
THE CODMAN FACILITY
The 9,000 square foot facility includes a 2,500 square foot youth
center with interactive fitness equipment, strength training
equipment, a women’s fitness club with state-of-the-art cardio and
strength equipment, and two studios for spinning, yoga and group
classes. A space has also been allocated for the construction of a
kitchen where healthy cooking and nutrition classes will be taught.
OUR MISSION
The mission of the facility is to improve the fitness level of
Dorchester residents - adults and children, healthy and unhealthy, fit
and unfit. By providing opportunities for all residents to participate
in regular, low cost fitness programs, it is hoped that those in poor
health will heal and recover while those in good health will be able
to develop and commit to a life-long fitness plan.
This mission is accomplished through the following:
• Free/low-cost exercise programs
• Special exercise programs for residents with diabetes and other
chronic diseases
• Collaboration with local schools to create opportunities for school
children to use the facility
• Collaboration with local community youth groups to create fitness
opportunities in after-school programs.
